A Conversation with God, Under the Ground
Yesterday, on an Israeli television program, Avinatan Or said:
“On day 79 of my captivity in the Hamas tunnels, I turned to God and said: I know I have barely spoken to You in seven years. And I know it may look hypocritical to come talk to You now, because suddenly I need something from You, so I come looking for You. And I will tell You something else: there is a good chance that when I get out of here, I will forget about You again. So I am not going to tell You stories. I will speak to You directly and honestly.
In the Torah, in the Ten Commandments, it is written: ‘Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long on the land that HaShem your God is giving you.’ That is a mitsva I always tried to keep. I worked hard to be there for my parents. I worked hard to honor them, even after I took off my kippa. Now it is Your turn to keep the other part: ‘so that your days may be long on the land,’ not under the land.”
His Tefila was heard. A year ago Or came up from the depths of the Hamas tunnels, and now, B”H, he is “on” the Land of Israel, with his family and everyone he loves.
